On Tuesday, July 27, 2021, Minister Mariusz Błaszczak approved the contract signed between the PGZ-Miecznik (eng. Swordfish) Consortium and the Armaments Inspectorate to deliver three frigates under the Miecznik programme included in the Technical Modernisation Plan of the Polish Armed Forces.
These are state-of-the-art vessels that will provide the Polish Navy with new operational capabilities necessary to perform a wide range of operations at sea. The PGZ-Miecznik Consortium consists Polish Armaments Group, PGZ Naval Shipyard in Gdynia and Remontowa Shipbuilding of the Remontowa Holding group.
The signed contract calls for developing, constructing, and delivering three frigate-class surface ships with an Integrated Combat System between 2021 and 2034. The value of the entire order, including the fire units and the logistics package, amounts to approximately PLN 8 billion, making it the largest contract in the history of the Polish defence industry. The project’s completion perspective is 2034.
- I expect the construction process to be as fast as with the Kormoran-type minehunters built at Remontowa Shipbuilding. This is a showcase of the Polish defence industry’s capabilities. It proves that it is possible to build ships in Poland, which Polish sailors appreciate. I am convinced this will also be the case with the three multi-purpose frigates - Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said during the ceremony. As he added, the frigates would be built in response to the needs of the Polish Navy.
